Engineers

I was talking to a couple of friends last night. The topic of our discussion? Well, do you notice how there are so many films and tv series that based on a certain profession. Here's a few examples:

  • Medical doctors - E.R., House, Grey's Anatomy, Nip/Tuck
  • Forensics/Genetics/Biotech - CSI
  • Mathematicians - Numb3rs, A Beautiful Mind
  • Musicians - Shine, Amadeus, Immortal Beloved, Chopin: Desire for Love, Long Vacation, Legend of 1900, Bird, Round Midnight (too many to name)
  • Police - Way too many to name
  • Lawyers - Ally McBeal, The Practice
And so forth.

Hmm.. I wonder what's missing?

YES ENGINEERS.

NO SHOWS ABOUT ENGINEERS. Even if there are shows that feature an engineer, the show itself will not center around engineering.

You guys get to become frickin' CSI, and what do we become? DILBERT?!

This is the message that the media is trying to send to us. Engineering is SO INCREDIBLY BORING that nobody even wants to watch it on TV, let alone pursue it as a career.

And who can blame them? Let's think of a scenario where we can base a movie on:

The Engineer-Kid (karate kid hack)

A teenager named Daniel is having fun with his friends when some jocks come and start causing trouble. Daniel tries to intervene but is totally outmatched by the bigger and stronger kids. He is rescued by the mysterious Mr. Miyagi, who becomes his sensei and teaches the young Daniel the secret art of Japanese engineering. Through sales of his exotic Japanese engineering products such as Nintendo and Sony Playstation, the young Daniel accumulates enough money to fund his mecha robot project which he names Mobile Suit Gundam and uses it to beat the living hell out of the jocks. Daniel wins.

Hmm... maybe not.

I rest my case.
